# Delete an API key

> Permanently delete an API key. **Admin only.**

The key stops authenticating **immediately** — any backend still sending it gets `401 Invalid API key` from the next request on. Check `lastUsedAt` on the list endpoint first if you are not sure whether the key is still in use.

Deleting is the first step of a manual rotation: delete the old key, create a new one, and update your backend configuration with the new secret.
